I am honored to be working with Project Pyramid group of students, faculty, and professionals to find ways of using business to alleviate poverty. My role with the group was to provide the international component of the experience in the form of a trip overseas. I guess this is how we ended up in Hyderabad for spring break…
Last week, a smaller team traveled to Dubai in the U.A.E to meet with an investor and owner of a satellite communications company called Thuraya. The purpose of the meeting and tour was to discuss how they fit our mission with Project Pyramid. Thuraya provides affordable satellite phones and data transmission for the majority of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Our group is now tasked with the challenge of determining how Thuraya can be used in the rural villages of India to bring access and information to the poor with a sustainable business method.
Every member of the project pyramid team trip arrived safely today in Hyderabad. We had a few flight delays and three people with lost luggage but morale seems to be strong. Our hotel is situated in the middle of two busy intersections in the northwest part of the city. The constant blaring of horns is something I am sure we will get used to by the end of our travels. Attached is a clip from our front porch and some other pictures. The group has its first complete meeting and dinner tonight with the purpose of outlining our tasks for the week.
